Now Emmaline Carson has settled into her career as a graphic designer, though she’d rather be painting or shopping with her sister Layla. But then – in the years before she went to art school in Paris – she was a shy, awkward teenager with frizzy hair, a flat chest and a massive crush on the boy across the street, Cole Marlowe. Too bad her incredibly hot neighbor only had eyes for Layla.
Cole is now a confident, laid-back attorney who’s even hotter than he used to be. He’s planning to stay single while working his way up the corporate ladder – until he’s knocked off course by a chance run-in with Emma.
Everything is different between Cole and Emma now. He finally sees her in a way she only dreamed of, and their hot chemistry is fueled by a growing friendship. But Emma’s deception of her sister – who wants Cole for herself – and the secret Cole’s been keeping for more than a decade threaten to tear apart what’s only just begun. Because sometimes the only thing standing in the way of now is then.

Now and Then The Now Series Book 1 eBook Brenda Rothert

First, even though this is part of a series, there is NO CLIFFHANGER. The next book is about Emma's sister. It's well written, no major typos or grammar issues.

Emma and Cole grew up as neighbors. Emma was an art nerd and Cole was a popular athlete. Emma's sister Layla was the pretty, popular one who got all the attention, including Cole's. Layla and Cole went out on a few dates in high school, but nothing ever came of it.

Emma and Cole run in to each other (he's now 27 and a lawyer, she's 24 and a graphic designer/artist), and there is an instant attraction for both. Here's where I had an issue with the story. Emma knows that Layla still thinks of Cole as "the one that got away" and wants to reconnect with him. So instead of telling Layla that she and Cole are together, Emma just acts like nothing is going on to keep Layla from freaking out. I get it, but after things start to get serious, she still won't tell anyone (including their parents, who are still neighbors/friends). There was much unnecessary angst about Cole being angry (justifiably) that Emma won't tell. I liked Emma and (really liked) Cole, the romance was good, but the Layla thing really got annoying after awhile.

There is also a subplot about Cole's sister, Shay, and I really wish a little more time had been devoted to this storyline. It kind of got rushed in the ending and I thought that part of the book was really interesting.

Overall, a good read, but I didn't love it.

Now and Then The Now Series Book 1 eBook Brenda Rothert Reviews

Now and Then has been sitting on my kindle for some time now. After reading Bound by Brenda Rothert and loving both the story and writing style, decided to grab this one, but just never got around to it, way too many new books and just not enough time. So yesterday when I was in the mood for a sweet romance that I would enjoy, thought it was about time I picked this up and boy am I glad I did, I haven’t been able to put it down.

Emmaline was always the shy nerdy type teenager that was always overshadowed by her older sister Layla, who was the pretty cheerleader that could have any guy she wanted. From the moment Cole Marlowe moved in across the street from Emmaline, she had a huge crush on him. But being three years younger, he never really saw her, it was always Layla. So upon graduation she decided to make a change with her life and off to Paris she went for 5 years to study art and when she came back she was a beautiful and much more confident women.

Cole Marlowe, now a hot and sexy junior lawyer working hard to make a name for himself at the practice he was working at. Cole had never notice Emmaline, that was until he ran into her, literally, 6 years later at a coffee shop near her work. After that, she was all he could think about, she was all grown up, sexy and confident and the three year age difference didn’t seem to matter anymore.

I absolutely loved this story, it was a nice fresh change from all the other books that are out there seem to have the same old same old story. I loved how from the moment these two reconnected, there were sparks and butterflies, but that things started out casual and built up. I truly enjoyed that these characters weren’t having sex and professing their undying love right away. Their love story was a sweet one but when these two finally hooked up, boy did it have its hot and very sexy moments. I loved how real the story and the characters were. I really enjoyed Emmaline’s character, she was shy and timid as a teenager but after coming back from Paris she was much more confident but it was nice to see she still had her moments of feeling insecure, especially when it came to Layla and Cole. I really liked how their relationship progressed over the story, it wasn’t perfect, they had their moments of struggle and with them keeping it from their families and his secret, it was true to real life and I love that. Like I said it was a nice fresh change from the same old same old that I keep picking up and get bored with really quick. This book kept me engaged from the moment it started to the moment I finished, can’t remember the last time I read a book in less than a day and a half. So if you are looking for a great well written sweet and sexy read, you should pick this one up, I wish I hadn’t waited so long and can’t wait to dig into Layla’s story now.
The first thing that stroke me when reading this book is how even though, it was not going anywhere, it felt rushed. It appears the writer was not letting her characters take form. Emma bringing her sister's name to every conversation she had with Cole became exhausting. Her insecurity was the very reason, her sister Layla was all over her. Also felt the writer lacks sophistication on the subject matter The Arts. It is elementary to single out the following artistic professions writer, musician as not being artists as where painter was!? There appear to be no significance whatsoever about "then" in contrast to the "now" in most instances, the "then" should have been omitted. Poor, poor writing! The book is all over the place, as if the writer felt the need to cover all aspects and events of life and jumble them up! It is pitiful how the writer attempt to create two mature/professional characters, yet they behaved worst than adolescents, i.e. that scene with her parents! Emma and was stupid and quite infuriating. I like to think this book was meant for an adolescent audience. The saddest part is that at times Cole's character wanted to break and come out the pages, but the writer kept him spineless when several opportunities presented itself for him to exert himself.
Emma is successful, smart, attractive, and clearly the sole attraction of Cole, her high school crush. However, that's not enough to pull her out of her teen drama, and she keeps comparing herself to her older, perfect, popular sister, who dated Cole years earlier.

Even though the characters are 24 and 27 years old, this felt like a New Adult read, because of the long trips down memory lane and the immature sister-envy drama.
